Attorney Lawrence J. Moran, Sr. concentrates his practice assisting the victims of serious, catastrophic and fatal injuries. As a plaintiff’s lawyer he has won millions of dollars in trial verdicts and settlements for countless seriously injured victims and their families across the region.

He maintains a strong professional interest in protecting the Civil Rights of both adults and children who have been seriously mistreated by school districts and other local , state and federal governmental entities and their employees or private industry.

During a career spanning more than four decades, Attorney Moran has served as the Chief Trial Lawyer in the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office prosecuting major felony cases. He has also previously served as General Counsel for Litigation for Lackawanna County where he supervised numerous lawyers in the handling of a wide variety of lawsuits in which the county was a named party.

In addition to his private practice, he currently serves as the Chief Public Defender for Lackawanna County. In this role he supervises a staff of eleven attorneys who represent indigent adults charged with criminal offenses.

Attorney Moran is the founder and principal of The Moran Law Group, LLC headquartered in Jermyn, Pa. He also is Of Counsel to the Scranton , Pa. based law firm of Lenahan and Dempsey, PC.

Distinctions/Memberships

Since 1994 Attorney Moran has maintained a dual certification by the National Board of Trial Advocacy as a Civil and Criminal Trial Advocate. The National Board of Trial Advocacy’s standards for certification include requiring a trial lawyer to furnish evidence of good standing in the lawyer’s state of admission, substantial involvement in several enumerated areas of trial advocacy, and substantial participation in continuing legal education and the development of the law. The Board also requires the lawyer to submit references from peers and judges, and to pass a written examination that tests his or her knowledge of civil or criminal trial law – or, in Mr. Moran’s case, both.

Since 2005 Mr. Moran has been recognized annually and selected by Philadelphia Magazine as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer. He is also a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum.

Attorney Moran has been admitted to the Bars of the Supreme Court of the United States of America, the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and both State and Federal Trial and Appellate Courts in Pennsylvania.

Attorney Moran is a graduate of the University of Scranton (magna cum laude) and the Villanova University School of Law.

Attorney Moran was a unanimous selection by the judges of the United States District Court for the middle district of Pennsylvania to serve on the Merit Selection Panel to recommend the appointment of a district magistrate judge.

Mr. Moran was appointed by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to serve on the Board of Law Examiners. Board members donate their time and legal expertise to serve. The board is responsible for determining who meets the minimum qualifications for competence, character and overall fitness to be admitted to the practice of law in Pennsylvania. Attorney Moran is one of seven members – the only one from Northeastern Pennsylvania – to serve a three-year term on the Board. His term commenced on June 9, 2019. He was reappointed by the Supreme Court on February 2, 2022, and designated to serve as Vice-Chair of the board.

Attorney Moran has taught courses in law at the University of Scranton and Marywood College. For decades he has provided lay service and leadership to his Roman Catholic home parish and diocese. 

Attorney Moran and his wife Kathryn are the parents of five children and the grandparents of eight.
